We completed trek 4 early last week. Although we camped as scheduled at
Tooth of Time camp on our last night after a long haul from Webster Park, we
noticed as we passed that folks appeared to be trying to set up camp near the base
of the short trail up to Mt. Schaeffer near the intersection of the trail
coming up and around the south side of Schaeffers and the trail that heads east
across the tooth crest. It was crowded with lots of folks. There was
lightning popping around west of Schaeffers that afternoon and it did not look at
all safe or smart to linger on Schaeffers Pass or the Tooth Ridge. Tooth of
Time camp was a fantastic place with lots of bouldering possibilities and an
easy and great view of both sunrise and sunset. We had some very interesting
vistas with dark rain from light colored clouds falling on sunlit green ground
south of the tooth ridge. It made for some great photographs. I highly
recommend that others complete their trek to the Tooth Camp unless they run out of
daylight or have some other physical problem. I also recommend that all wear
sturdy backpacking boots to deal with the jagged, rocky trail across the
Tooth ridge at the end of this long day. The added support of this kind of boot
is sorely needed at this time of day to help protect tired feet and ankles
from sprains that can be common with tired hikers carrying lots of weight at the
end of the day.
