I have a very vague memory that (Supervisory) Rangers or Back-Country
Staff used to check Shaefers Pass and Tooth Ridge campsites to ensure
that everyone that was camped there was in fact scheduled to camp there.
However, though I do recall passing one heated discussion between
Staffers and Advisors/Crew Chief at SP (topic unknown), I never saw
anyone being asked to relocate. Do any of the other old-timers on the
List remember these checks? If this problem is getting out of hand,
perhaps the Ranch should reinstitute them.
I will say that those Crews that push on from the Upper Clark's Fork and
Ponderosa campsites are missing the (usually premier) campfire program
at Clark's Fork for the sake of saving maybe 45 minutes on their next
day. I also am amazed that anyone would consider camping just below the
summit of Shaefers Peak in view of the weather the Ranch has experienced
this summer - that peak routinely gets pounded by lightning in bad
weather. Plus there are no bear bag cables at that junction. Looks
like some Advisors are smelling the barn, too. Not good!
