The only thing available at Ponil Cantina is root beer ($0.75, and $0.25
for refills), but there is a separate trading post attached to the
Cantina.
Don't rely on the backcountry trading posts, because they are not
always stocked (many did not have stamps or disposable cameras available
when we were there, and there were previous reports of inadequate bug
spray and certain fuels). Think ahead and buy what you need at the Base
Camp trading post before you leave for the trail (if you didn't bring it
with you already).
$20 per scout is more than enough; our Ranger recommended $10.
However, one scout purchased a pair of hiking socks at one of the
trading posts, which cost just under $10. As an advisor, I brought $40
(in case one of the scouts needed to borrow some), and that was more
than enough.

Pholks,
Please tell me about Philmont's backcountry trading posts, and the
Cantina at Ponil.
I understand that the trading posts are located at same places as
commissaries; they sell film, batteries, postcards, stamps, replacement
items like tent stakes, etc; and food items are limited - trail mix but
no "junk food".
What is available at the Ponil Cantina, and what does it cost?
Would $20 for a Scout to take into the backcountry be an appropriate
amount?
