We budgeted $1000 per person for the expedition and had a bit of change left
over to refund to each family. That did not include personal gear purchases
or out of pocket incidentals. Total cost per person -- other than
incidentals -- was between $900 and $950. That included all meals while traveling.
We did not "tour" the western states. We flew from Atlanta to Denver;
chartered a school bus to take us to/from Philmont; and rented cars in Colorado
Springs for a day of sightseeing on the trip west. Drove up Pike's Peak,
toured the Air Force Academy, ate chuckwagon dinner at Flying W, and took scenic
drive through Garden of the Gods. Spent two nights in a Colorado Springs
motel. Red-eye flight back to Atlanta from Denver. Crew of 11, including 2
adults. We did get a break on costs when one of the parents picked up the tab
for gear shipped by UPS to/from the ranch.
