Re: [Philmont]: RE: Shipping stoves - rules change?

    --------------------
To prepare white gas stoves with self-contained fuel (Coleman Peak 1 for
example) and fuel bottles for shipping, the DOT guidelines call for

    1) emptying the container of all fuel
    2) washing out the fuel container with hot soapy water
    3) rinsing out the fuel container with hot water
    4) air drying the container for a minimum of 12 hours

     ---------------

Which is how we have had to handle them in 2000, 2002 and 2004. Is anything really "new" about this?

BTW - and I'm not taking a stab at the Philpostofficecrew since I know they've got a big job - but "packing" the stoves seems to be more a matter of tossing them into the box and sealing it. Had 2 mangled stoves in the 2002 shipment and thought it was because we did not provide enough space in the box (I had precision packed them for the trip to Philmont), so I sent a much larger box in 2004 with lots of packing material for cushioning. Got the return shipment with the stoves, tanks and our Polar-Pur in the bottom of the box with packing tossed on top. Two more mangled stoves. We use Peak I Apex II stoves and they have a fairly fragile top structure. If I ever go again, I'll bring individual packing boxes for the burner units and pack those myself before leaving the box at the post office.
