By all means call Philmont and talk to the doctor or nurse. Have detailed information on how much the person has lost, type of training and amount of experience backpacking and high altitude hiking. I have always been a large guy but have extensive experience backpacking, hiking, etc. and was on an agressive training campaign. I lost a lot of weight and after talking to the doctor and nurse a couple of times to update them on my status I had no problems....my weight was close and depending on which scales I was OK but don't chance it. Also, make sure blood pressure is good as it will go up some at the higher altitude.

How strict is Philmont on the weight restrictions?
I have a 47 y.o. adult on my crew who is currently 5 pounds over the maximum limit. He has been training and working out, but just can't seem to drop the last 5 pounds.
I have cautioned him about this since last fall when we began our training hikes. I have other adults on the crew, so we're OK from that perspective. However it would devastate his son, which would not be good for the crew as a whole.
Any input would be appreciated. We arrive on Saturday!
