RE: [Philmont]: Stoves, II

For what it's worth, members of our crew shipped stoves out to Philmont this
year via UPS and USPS (following the method of cleaning out the stove,
washing and airing out the tanks, etc.). They arrived in fine condition. The
owners of each stove made the decision out there to pack their stoves in
their luggage, against better advice, for the return trip. Upon return to
base camp, they washed and aired their stoves and bottles and packed them in
their luggage. Neither of them were challenged by anyone at the Albuquerque
airport (where I believe they xray all of the checked luggage) and their
baggage made it back to ATL unmolested.

TSA controls what you can carry on an airplane as a passenger. FAA controls
what goes on airplanes as luggage. (FAA always has controlled this and
these laws are over 10 years old!) If you want to see what you can get on an
airplane you have to check with both the TSA and the FAA and believe me, the
TSA has no idea what the FAA regulations are!

either (1) those who reported that the rules recently changed had actually
encountered a clerk who did not know the rules, or (2) the TSA is slow to
update their website.
