RE: [Philmont]: Philmont Weight Restrictions

All,

The adult with the weight question on my crew contacted the Philmont chief
medical officer on Wednesday and explained his situation (5# over, weight
lifter, mountain bike rider, muscular body type) and he was told to come on
out to Philmont. Apparently Philmont does have some wiggle room on weights
based on body type, physical condition, etc. that is applied on a one on one
basis for those not meeting the criteria.

As almost everyone suggested it is best to address this before hand with
Philmont medical staff. The medical officer seemed pleased that he had
called to discuss his concerns. Too many people who know they are
overweight just show up and expect to be let onto the trail. Then argue
when told they can not participate.

That said; he knows he is not guaranteed to be approved based on the actual
medical recheck examination. But he feels very encouraged after talking
with the medical officer.

I will provide an update upon our return. We leave this afternoon for
Philmont, arriving tomorrow morning.

Thank you to everyone for their input. There appears to be no cut and dry
answer and the best option is what I told the adult... call Philmont
immediately and discuss with medical staff.

The adult in question has been trying to contact Philmont's medical staff
all afternoon. So far he has not been able to talk to whoever is in charge.

Hopefully this will have a happy ending. I am so ready to return to
Philmont and expecting to have a wonderful time! He's had one year to
prepare, sorry it has to come down to the wire.

One of the advisors in our 2002 crew was really close to the limit (he
hadn't quite gotten down there yet) and was worried about getting booted.
Before lunch, our ranger told him not to worry as the doctors would cut him
some slack. After lunch, the doctor was ready to boot him because he was 2
lbs over the limit. Fortunately, he could remove his boots and a large belt
to get under the limit by a pound. The doctor reluctantly approved him.
>From this, I think we can draw several conclusions:

a) Rangers don't know everything
b) Don't eat a big lunch until after the medical checks
c) Don't assume the doctor's going to cut you any slack.
