I bought a roll of 2 mil plastic sheeting from The Home Depot for about $3
and cut two ground sheets from it. The plastic is in the paint department,
to be used for drop cloths.
If I was planning to use the plastic for a long time, 2 mil would not have
been thick enough. I don't think any of the ground sheets ripped or had any
problems, and they didn't take up much room or much weight in our packs.
A ground sheet is important to help you keep dry if you are setting up the
tent on wet ground. It also makes it easier to clean the tents when you
return to base camp.
Sounds like another case where wisdom comes from sources other than the
Ranger.
Thanks,
Scott Sibley
