RE: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

On all my treks to Philmont and other high altitude adventures, as well
as winter camping, I've carried a pair of down socks that I got at REI
more than 20 years ago. I keep them in my sleeping bag; they more than
do the job and I'm glad I had them at Philmont this year. I'm sure that
fleece socks or booties would work just as well.

Another Cold Weather gear item. Sleeping socks.

The afternoon that we hiked for 15 minutes in heavy hail - I said they
were
marble sized but the scouts said some were an inch - we were cold and
wet.
When I finally got in the sleeping bag, my feet were still wet. It took
a
long time to warm them up so I could really fall asleep. I was wishing
there
was a pair of socks in the sleeping bag, just for sleeping. Nice, warm,
dry,
toasty, socks.

Thanks,
Scott Sibley
