A friend has one. Here are his comments:
Good points - compact; light, easy to use; kills all living nasties in the
water, including viruses, crypto, giardia; does not affect the taste.
Bad points - CR1123 battery is expensive, around $10; you have to wait
anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours before the water is safe to drink; will
not clear up silty water; does not remove bad odors or taste from the water.
The 15 minute wait to kill viruses isn't too bad if you have already
filtered the water to remove crypto and giardia.
I also have an MSR MiniWorks filter that pretty much takes care of
everything except viruses so I got the Miox to take care of viruses and to
use as a backup.
The Steripen uses UV light to kill nasties and is pretty instant so it has
pretty much the same advantages and disadvantages as the Miox except that
Backpacker and Outside magazines have noted that it is a little fragile.
