I bought a Miox purifier on Ebay (still pretty expensive) shortly after they came out. We recently returned from a 9 day visit to the Red River Gorge area in Kentucky. We filtered everything we drank and used Polar Pure. Most of the time we could find clear running streams but in a couple cases needed to pump out of the Red River itself (kind of murky). In cases where we were filling up everything we could carry (for a dry camp on a ridge), we used the Miox to help increase our capacity (we were carrying 5 bottles of Polar Pure). After that, I generally used it every time I filled up. Some of the people didn't like the iodine taste so the Miox was a welcome change for them. It seems that I needed to double dose just about every mixture to ensure a good result on the test strip. After getting comfortable with this, I usually tested every other liter I treated to reduce the hassle of testing. I usually install a fresh battery before leaving for any long trip (rather than !
carry a spare).
Overall, I like the unit but it is a bit cumbersome to use (compared with the simplicity of Polar Pure). I like the fact that it kills everything. Even though the wait time for crypto is 4 hours, treating a few gallons at night makes for pure water in the morning even if it's not filtered.
