One thing I've noted in two posts is that water may need more than the
suggested treatment in order to show a good test result.

This should be allowed for in planning for water treatment. The deciding
factor on whether the water is treated adequately should be the test result
and not just following the treatment recipe.

Water quality may vary all over the map. Treat it using the recommended
formula and then test it.
If the test result is OK you're done. If not treat it further and test it
again. Continue until you have a good test result.

Water in sufficient quantity and of satisfactory quality is probably the
single most important factor in a successful Philmont trek. Be sure
everyone in the crew knows how to "Be Prepared" to have plenty of pure water
throughout the trek.
