Another vignette:
In Feb 2003, I suffered what has been diagnosed as a TIA (layman -
stroke without damage). Scheduled to be on 624-G-4 (#4), I was worried.
I was told by my doctor that I wasn't going anywhere unless I lost
weight and reduced cholesterol levels. After 2-3 months of doctor
visits, tests, etc., I was released to begin training again. My doctor
also signed my form, after I dropped 30 pounds (210 to 180 - I'm 5'9")
and reduced cholesterol levels to the 160-170 area (living through
chemsitry). Arriving at Philmont, I was a little concerned about the
medical recheck, even though I had a medical release from both my
internist and neurologist. All the medical staff wanted to know was
whether I had my meds. Breezed right through. (Luckily, I have
naturally low blood pressure). Lost another 10 pounds while on the
trail
Fast forward to last month: 612-L-7 (#4 as well). I'm in great shape.
I now weigh about 5 pounds more than when I got off the trail two years
previous. I've been playing both outdoor and indoor soccer (not bad for
51), and lifting weights (concentrating on core and balance). Didn't
have time to do much training hikes. At the re-check, I was
red-flagged, due to the TIA in '03. Even though I had completed a trek
since the incident. When the re-checker has a question/problem, you are
sent to the infirmary (around the corner) to see the intern. If the
intern still has questions (as in my case), the attending physician must
sign off. I was worried that my nervousness would shoot my blood
pressure up. Not to worry it went down - from 120/80 to 110/75. The
attending physician was ok with everything, and away I went. This time,
I only lost 5 pounds. No blisters, and not much soreness. (I really
encourage the weight lifting - I believe that allowed me to really enjoy
the trek, including the night-time forced march from Tooth Ridge - but
that's another story)
Bottom line: you never know what is going to happen at the re-check.
If you take any advice from this list, take this: If you think you may
have a problem with anybody in your crew, make contact before you leave.
Get it in writing, both home doctor, and Philmont. Burn up the fax
wires if necessary. Don't put either your crew advisor or the Philmont
staff in a bind.
Oh, and double check that you have a copy of each crew member's
insurance card (front and back) before you leave - or you will be using
that fax while trying to get the crew on the trail!

Hi:
The Philmont medical staff is serious about enforcing
the maximum weight limits.
Hi all you philmont listers:
Just FYI, on our trek this year, in late June, no one
was even weighed at medical re-check. I personally took in a physical
that showed me 3 pounds under the max for my height, and I had to have
my BP checked twice, and all they did was ask me if my weight had
changed. I told them it was a little less than the physical showed (a
true statement) but they didn't check me. Guess it depends on who does
the re-check.
