I have no great theoretical contribution to this discussion, but I can
tell you that I have been using a footprint (it was on sale) with my
Meteor Light for the last 4-1/2 years with no inside sheet. I camp 12
months of the year in Western Washington, and have been rained,
hailed, sleeted, and snowed on. Many times. In 80 or so nights of
camping, I've never had water inside my tent and the footprint has
protected the bottom of my tent from a myriad of roots, rocks, and
cones.

I'm an outie.
