[Philmont]: Ground cloths and tent liners

I have been reading this thread for a few days now, and have my own
opinion. Where the tarp, sheet of plastic or whatever when I go camping
depends on a number of conditions. Mostly I believe that tent floors last
longer if there is something between the ground and the tent. The best
grassy conditions may negate that need. When car camping, you can rake the
ground. I do not carry a rake when backpacking. I do move the big stuff,
but I do no not find many grassy campsites then either. The ground cloth
may not make the ground any more comfortable on pebbely ground, but it cuts
the abrasion against the hard surfaces.

If I am using an old tent that may already have a worn floor, then the
sheet goes inside as that is where the most protection is needed. I had
one old tent, too big for backpacking, where I used two tarps, one in and
one out.

So where I put the cloth depends on what condition the tent is in, what the
ground conditions are like and, at times, who is with me and how many
ground cloths are available. But if it is my own tent, and the ground is
not as manicured as the greens at Augusta, there will be a layer of
protections between the tent and the ground properly tucked so it does not
collect water.

Your mileage and tent life may very.
