Hi John, it was really great to read a post from you. I have been wondering how you were.

  construed as hazing.

Ultra compacting is not environmental friendly at all. Packing trash tight and/or tapeing it shut prevents any sort of degradation in landfills. An environmentally responsible person just simply won't do it.

And yes, to require it should be construed as hazing.

  For example.

Two years ago we ran into a demanding sort at one of the camps. After I as an advisor heard about it, the next day (it was at our layover camp) I went with the youth and the guy told them the same thing. I waited in the background. The youth came back to where I was waiting. Without being seen, I took the trash and handed it to the same guy. He accepted it. Afterward I said to him"by the way, you shouldn't say anything to a youth about compacting trash that you would not say to an adult, should you?" I had to ask him again to get the answer. I suggested he mend his ways.

Whether he did or not, I don't know. But maybe I helped the next youth to come up to him to not be badgered.

You only have 24 X 10 on the trail at Philmont. There are just a lot more beneficial and fun things to do besides ultra compact trash.

On a final note, more than one finger has been cut or sprained trying to cram little bits of paper into things they shouldn't be crammed into. Especially when it's not necessary.

Ultra compacting comes under the heading of "don't do anything dumb and the trek will turn out good".
