Re: [Philmont] - philmont Digest - V01 #1447

I have been to Philmont 4 times, twice for training and twice on a long term backpack. Both times I did the long term I dropped 30 lbs to meet the weight during the year prior to the trek. I think the key is to get within 5lbs of goal. My daughter who worked there as a ranger told me that most adults drop at least 5lbs over the week and many as much as 10 lbs. I took the weight issue seriously. The weight restrictions are useful guidelines for the strenuous physical activity of the treks. It's not wise to assume that at higher elevation, and under stress that
your body will say "yippee" and fall into line. The blood pressure I am told raises
a little anyway with the elevation. Adults have died at Philmont from heart attacks.
You have to use common sense. Train, exercise and get ready for the trek. That goes for youth and adults. You will be more comfortable, and have a better time. We train for up to a year prior with our crews at higher elevation. The minimum training for us is 10-15 miles over three days. We generally will work in at least 5-8 training hikes before going to Philmont. Our kids bond as a team, and are well prepared for their trek time.
As an adult advisor you have to be at your best and set the example. I was at Philmont once getting my blood pressure checked and an adult who had just had heart surgery was arguing about not being allowed to hike a 10 day trek! I guess it takes all kinds, but I'd rather error on the safe side!

Last summer I spent some time in the medical shack (after being thrown off a horse at Beaubien, watch out for the big bay named Spike). A Scout from Chicago was sent home for being above the maximum weight limits. He was a big stocky football player and looked like he could have carried a 100 pound pack with ease. The head of the medical staff spent a lot of time on the phone talking to the Scouts mom. But the Scout was unfortunately sent home. The crew leaders should have worked the problem before the Scout arrived at Philmont.

We had one adult this year you spent almost 18 hours trying to get his blood pressure into an acceptable range. He had no previous problems, like 120/80 at home. It was not until 8am on day 2 that somebody figured out they were using a "youth" cuff on him. When they used the "adult" cuff, and they tried 2 different ones, his blood pressure "magically" come in line, like 125/84. I know this may be an unusual circumstance, but sure caused his and several other peoples blood pressure to rise. <grin> He had it re-checked when he came off the trail and it was 120/82.

> Just FYI, on our trek this year, in late June, no one was even weighed at medical re-check. I personally took in a physical that showed me 3 pounds under the max for my height, and I had to have my BP checked twice, and all they did was ask me if my weight had changed. I told them it was a little less than the physical showed (a true statement) but they didn't check me. Guess it depends on who does the re-check.

We had one adult this year you spent almost 18 hours trying to get his blood pressure into an acceptable range. He had no previous problems, like 120/80 at home. It was not until 8am on day 2 that somebody figured out they were using a "youth" cuff&nbsp;on him. When they used the "adult" cuff, and they tried 2 different ones, his blood pressure "magically" come in line, like 125/84. I know this may be an unusual circumstance, but sure caused his and several other peoples blood pressure to rise. &lt;grin&gt; He had it re-checked when he came off the trail and it was 120/82.</DIV>

But there is a finite limit for the youth and an even more finite limit for adults (for whom they are about as flexible as a steel pipe). We had 1 youth and 1 adult that had to stay home last year. It wasn't pleasant but it certainly beat having to make arrangements to send them home. BTW, they both formally requested, and received, a refund for medical reasons.
