Pete,
I took water shoes. They were a step up from the slip on type but were still only $9 at a local outdoor supplier. For the most part they worked well, although there were times I wished for a thicker sole. Several of the youth took sandals as did my co-advisor. His were inexpensive ones (i.e. not Tevas) and worked well.

I may have been the one talking about washing Tyvek. Two points: 1) no soap but you might throw in an old tennis shoe to help with the softening; 2) I'd still suggest going down to the commercial laundromat; if the Tyvek gets tangled around an agitator it might do damage to your home machine; a front loader might be better.

The things in the first aid kit we found particularly useful: moleskin (incl Spenco secondskin, athletic tape, blister kits), a small bottle of alcohol (for cleaning the moleskin adhesive off the scissors and for general antiseptic), a body lubricant (buttpaste or body glide or similar) and Ibuprophen (aka Vitamin I, "I be hurting" pills, etc, etc). We also took one large communal bottle of sunscreen and it was a lifesaver for the three or four really fair-skinned kids in the crew.
