On the tyvek, the foot prints now a days could be up to $40ish. I know the tyvek is a $135.00 a roll. Use your troop sale tax # & save, we did. You will be way ahead on cost. Look at it like this, $135.00 / by $40.00= 4 foot prints, even at $20.00 each you are ahead. I have cut out 5, 2 man tents and 3, 1 man tent foot prints and have plenty of tyvek left to make other things with. I'am thinking about the dining fly thing next. The tyvek is only 9 foot tall, you can make it any length you want. Thrifty,,,,

<< Re-visiting the topic of camp shoes. Would "water socks" make good camp
  shoes? >>

First, good camp shoes should be light and protective of the fees, including bottom and especially the frontal area of the toes and easy to put on and take off. A slip on leather moccasin with a sole other than just the leather it's made of fits this bill nicely.

I'm a canoeist and kayaker and own several kinds of water shoes, sandals, wet suit booties, etc., so I have my choice and don't have to go out to buy. None of these would be my choice at Philmont for several reasons, but mostly they don't meet the needs of camp shoes at Philmont.

More importantly, the use of "water shoes" implies that one should wade in the water with them. At Philmont, nobody needs to wade in the water. In fact it should be discouraged by all advisors to STAY OUT OF THE WATER. Think about it, you don't need to be wading around in somebody Else's drinking water. If not in actuality on the ranch, then in eventuality downstream.

  <<Tyvek ground sheets.>>
  Don't know, I don't find a need for them.

  <<Diaper Rash>>

Mostly caused by sweat evaporating and leaving tiny cubic shaped (and sharp edged) salt crystals on the skin. When rubbed between layers of skin it acts just like sand paper. Also caused by unclean toilet habits....read insufficient cleaning afterward.

Herein, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Body hygiene helps if not eliminates the problem.

That being said even the most fastidious individuals will have a case sneak up on you and set you on fire.

At that time, the best, absolute best treatment is a thorough cleaning of the area and a liberal application of Desitin which is the absolute BEST. Guaranteed it will get white oxide all over whatever it comes into contact with, but it works miracles. 8-10 hours later, you don't even know you had a problem. That is a miracle.

As for 4 essentials, I'd say...

  Desitin
  Headache relief
Something to control diarrhea, ie Immodium
  Bandaids

These are the four I carry on day hikes in my fanny pack.

However, a PhilCrew should have a lot more common stuff in the "first aid" kit beyond just first aid items. Along these lines, the first that comes to mind with kids is Pepto Bismol. Since I have a cast iron stomach, I never need the stuff, but many kids away from home have use for it.

The list goes on....and on....and on ad infinitum.
