On the first aid kit take a look at the first aid kit described at

http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/safety/firstaid.html

Not only are the contents of the kit listed but the use of each item
is described. It might be worth printing the page and putting it
inside your first aid kit.

Another first aid kit is described at

http://www.abc-of-mountaineering.com/articles/medical.asp

The importance of foot care to a good Philmont experience cannot be
overstated.
Petroleum jelly is great for soothing feet that have been walked on
all day. It is also pretty good as a general purpose sunscreen all by
itself, although
there are obviously many formulated products to satisfy the beach
market that may be as good or better.

To protect ourselves from the sun in the 1965 trek we all wore
cowboy style hats. It turned out we had our share of bright sunny
days and the hats were really valuable.

I would take something along to repel stinging and biting insects.
Likely Philmont will have a good product to recommend and which
will be available. Your local pharmacist should be able to recommend
something to take along.

You are going to have a great experience. Remember to
relax and have fun!

Best wishes,

Joe Jansen
