Not a medico but petroleum jelly and I are old friends as I once worked
at a manufacturing facility where it was made.
Take a look at
http://familydoctor.org/132.xml
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/nosebleedchildren.htm
http://www.pedsforparents.com/articles/2807.shtml
All three mention that a light coating of petroleum jelly is good to
help prevent nosebleed.
A good general introduction to skin care is at
http://www.ofspirit.com/nancyzare1.htm
A good medical article on dry skin is at
http://www.jaapa.com/issues/j20040901/articles/dryskin.html
In brief, petroleum jelly contains lipid like hydrocarbons that are very
soothing to the skin and can form a protective barrier that helps protect
the skin and helps keep the skin from drying out.
Skin care on a Philmont Trek, especially foot skin care, is worth paying
attention to. It is one of the most important factors in having a
successful backpacking experience.
