Re: [Philmont]: Luggage Restrictions?

I just got off the phone with NWA - overall size 62", max weight - 50 lbs.
charges are $80 for oversize, $25 for overweight but under 70, $50 for over
70 under 100lbs. However, the group reservationist I spoke to did say that
backpacks normally are not considered oversized, and are listed in THEIR
paperwork as "free baggage" unless they are over the weight. She did mention
seabags normally were oversized. Our crew went in 2003 and didn't have any
problems or additional fees at all - out of Philadelphia. We pack them into
either a sports bag, or the pack bags the Army/Navy stores sell - 36" long,
22" wide and I don't know how deep. We are not expecting any problems, as
they definitely won't go over the weight, and have gone through before with
no trouble.

But Joe's post made me call, and I suppose there still could be issues if
someone wanted to be really harsh. since we will not have 2 checked pieces
each, and our pack bag will be the only checked piece, we are planning on no
problems!

Subject: [Philmont]: Luggage Restrictions?

Fellow Philmonters:

I am days away from traveling to Philmont with my crew. I have just been
informed that checked luggage (i.e., seabag with backpack inside) is
considered oversize and is subject to additional fees (in my case, the
additional fee is 2/3 the cost of a ticket!).

Has anyone experienced this problem flying on NWA this year or in the
recent past? Are there waivers or such granted to Boy Scouts of America?
Does anyone know of a way around this unexpected, unbudgeted expense?

Thanks for your help.

Joe Hart
