Just got back from Philmont last week and American Air did not check
size but did check weight. Many of our contingent had sea bags. My
large duffle is pushing the 62" limit, but nothing was said. On the
outbound flight, my bag did come up 51 pounds and I had to remove an
item to get below the 50 lb. limit. Different airlines may have
different policies.

Subject: [Philmont]: Luggage Restrictions?
Fellow Philmonters:
I am days away from traveling to Philmont with my crew. I have just been
informed that checked luggage (i.e., seabag with backpack inside) is
considered oversize and is subject to additional fees (in my case, the
additional fee is 2/3 the cost of a ticket!).
Has anyone experienced this problem flying on NWA this year or in the
recent past? Are there waivers or such granted to Boy Scouts of America?
Does anyone know of a way around this unexpected, unbudgeted expense?
Thanks for your help.
Joe Hart
