Some features of a "rock climbing shoe" are described at

http://www.indoorclimbing.com/climbing_shoes.html

My answer to your question

>The question my son brought up, which I hadn't thought of is, what shoes do
>we wear while rock >climbing? Our boots or our camp shoes?

is you could wear either.

For best results in any specialized activity you consider using the tool
designed
for the job. A "rock climbing shoe" will help your feet get "purchase"
on the rock better than a more general purpose shoe.

I would ask the opinion of the rock climbing instruction people and follow
their recommendation. By showing respect to the instructor you will
get a better instructional experience.

Perhaps more important than the type of shoe, whether rock climbing or
hiking, is the practice of gradually putting your weight onto a new footing
before depending on the footing. Many hiking injuries result when weight
is put on a new step before you are sure of your footing.

You are going to have a great time. Remember to relax and enjoy yourself.
Be sure to look back at where you have been during your hiking frequently --
the scenery is magnificent!
