I found it slightly cooler this year on average than my previous two treks,
one starting 10 days earlier and one starting a week later than this year’s
7/1. The coldest part of the day, of course, was just before the sunrise.
We had two mornings that my thermometer read 40 degrees. That was our
second night at Ute Meadows and at Upper Dean Cow. Most mornings it was
45-50 degrees. I did experience a night in the 20s at Copper Park in ’01 so
it can get colder.
I would not be comfortable in a 45 degree bag unless I had a liner or long
underwear which I have not carried. I guess you could weight the 45 degree
bag and the extra clothes and compare to the 20 degree bag. I have always
carried my 20 degree North Face Blue Kazoo. After all these years, I don’t
think it qualifies as a 20 degree bag anymore. Either it is not as warm as
it used to be or I don’t generate as much heat as I used to. And yes, I
always store it in a huge bag hanging in a closet to prevent as much
permanent compression as possible. Anyway, at less than 2 ½ pounds, it has
been a great backpacking bag.

Phil,
What is the temperature at night on Trek 21? I am trying to figure out
which sleeping bag to use. I have a 20 degree or a 45 degree with a 15
degree liner. I don’t mind being cool, but I sure don’t want to be cold,
and it would be less weight.
Thanks

Just got back from doing 21. The diaries that are out there are pretty
good. Only change in recent years (for 2004 I think) is that you now stay
at Flume Canyon for the 2nd night on the trail and you must take the burro
so no Wilson Mesa. I don’t have time right now to write up a trek report,
but if you have any specific questions I would be happy to answer.

I have read several Trek 21 Diaries that are several years old. I was
looking for one from this year and if someone has one, please e-mail it to
me. I wanted to see if there had been any changes.
