Regarding camp shoes, though. Last trip I carried a pair of good, sturdy
walking shoes for 70 miles. Never wore them. (Luckily I have a pair of
30-yr old iking boots that feel like a second skin.) However, lots of guys
on our crew are taking the Crocs that you see at every store and mall.
These things are the absolute lightest, very comfortable, have a thick sole,
enclosed toe--just about ideal. They won't work for rock climbing, but they
see perfect for wearing in camp.
My response:
I wore the boots that *were* going to go on my Philmont trek next week, to
Yosemite to hike up to Half Dome.
Well, fortunately (not great for the half dome hike, but good for Philmont)
one of my boots blew out on this 17 mile day hike (in the first two miles!).
So, I guess I got lucky it didn't happen at Philmont, which it would have
had I not gone on this hike. Unfortunately, the trekking pole that I
normally wrap a wad of duct tape around failed before I started the hike so
I left it in camp, and did not have my duct tape with me for a repair (a bad
equipment day). Since this is typically a day hike, I was hard pressed to
find another hiker with stuff for repairs. Finally found someone with some
medical tape that I used that got me through the hike (but not nearly as
good as duct tape).
So, having a good pair of walking shoes for your camp shoes can be handy if
your boots blow out. Had I not gone to Yosemite, my boots would have blown
out on our trek(and subsequently adorned the entrance gateway) and I'd have
been hiking in the camp shoes. Anyway, I'm off to REI today to get some
replacements, which I'll have to wear as much as I can to break in as much
as I can for Philmont.
FWIW, the blown out boots were already Philmont branded, so I guess now I'll
have some new boots to brand :-)
