I read On the Beaten Path last year (701-M1, trek 21). A very good read
for the trail, especially if you have any interest in the AT. I can
thank someone on this list for the recommendation, although I do not
remember who. Another I read at Philmont on another trek was The Man
Who Walked Through Time by Colin Fletcher. The story of the first trip
afoot through the Grand Canyon (not across).

I loved A WALK IN THE WOODS also - although I didn't carry it with me -
that would have added a decent amount of weight :)
I am going to look in the Patrick McManus books - we are doing some
local backpacking this year and always like to have some humor with me!
If you enjoyed A WALK IN THE WOODS, you may enjoy a couple of the other
books Bill Bryson has written - I have read "I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF"
and "THE LOST CONTINENT" and enjoyed both of them immensely! Another
great read based on the Appalachian trail (I'm from PA can you tell) is
Robert Rubin's "On The Beaten Path" , a good combination of trail humor
and home humor - I enjoyed this one immensely! I have another one
sitting here among the many that I have yet to read - A WALK ACROSS
AMERICA by Peter Jenkins, I might try it yet this summer - but like I
said it is sitting here among the many!
