[philmont] Expredition 12 Journal

Larry,
I don't know what to say. Timing is everything. I am sitting here.
Waiting for a response to my calls to an advisors cell phone of a crew
that must have hit Basecamp around 3 hours ago. If the situation had
been different, I would be standing next to him and those boys right
now. "Adult" considerations got in the way. There is another crew of
boys who I also know well that are two days from the end of their trek.
Philmont, basecamp, and the southern part of the ranch has dominated my
thoughts for the last 10 days. Your eloquent report was just manna from
heaven for me.
I took my Troop to summer camp yesterday and called the lead Advisor's
cell phone from the parade grounds. I knew he wouldn't have his phone
with him (neither would I), but I just had to let him know that "The
Crew" at camp was thinking about them, and we thought it would be a neat
message for him to get when he returned from the trail.
A few minutes ago, I talked to my son up at camp (it's killing me not
to be there for my boys, but a new job demands my time). My son and I
discussed the Philmont crews, which includes many of his friends, and we
talked about how we could have been there with those guys if fate had
twisted another way. He knocked me over when he said "there will be
other times Dad", and I said "no, I think the next time I get a
chance... Well son... I'm just getting too old". He said "Dad, don't
sell yourself short, you've got a long way to go yet". This is a 16 year
old kid that calls me "the old man" at fire calls, and brags about how
he beats me on all our Firefighter tests and training evolutions. It was
a side of him I have never seen before. I knew it was there, but I've
never heard him verbalize it. We did a trek in '04 and he grew quite a
bit on that trek. I just didn't realize that he was still reaping the
benefits of that experience.
God, that's why I love being a Scoutmaster, the pay is WAY above scale.
I've had similar experiences with dozens of boys, and cherish every one
of them, but to have it happen with your own son (after 30 years in
Scouting).... Well, its priceless.
Thanks Larry, your report hit many of the camps we did on trek 11 back
in '04, and I could write for an hour about the details that I found
useful in your note. I was most gratified to hear that Carson meadows is
up and running as an SAR camp through the fire issues. When we stayed
there it was a trail camp, but boy what a beautiful camp, and the stars
were incredible! They were working on the staff cabin when we went
through, and it looked great.
Thanks Larry, You made my WEEK,
 Tom
