The comment about the "We All Made It" plaque reminded me of something that happened on our trip. Our crew leader put the plaque in his day pack to take on the plane. Probably a smart move because the backpacks are probably handled pretty roughly by the baggage handlers.
When we got to airport security, the ceramic plaque showed up on the xray monitors as a big black spot. Unpacking and hand checking were required, and they were a bit surprised that the plaque showed up as a "black hole".

Roy--Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to write.I'm glad you caught the tie-in between the Old Scout in the Opening and the letter to Grandpa and the old home movies at the end of the Closing. We planned that with the hope that many participants would catch on, but we haven't been sure how it was working. About two weeks ago, we also put up a sign on the way out to the Opening firebowl that's a replica of the Philturn historic marker that used to be at the intersection of highway 64 and the Ponil road and that is seen in closeup in the old Philturn footage shown at Closing.I miss the old conquistador and his "trusty Spanish blade" a bit, too. (I played him back during my first go around on the staff in 1984...) The Spaniard who is portrayed in the new Opening Campfire, Don Diego de Varga, was a real person. He led the army that bloodlessly recaptured Santa Fe several years after the Pueblo uprising. He still has his trusty blade, but we only allow a couple of our actors to actually draw the thing! We've noticed that crews don't come down to take pictures after Closing anymore, and we've been talking about creating some new patch signs for the firebowl and about how we can work them into the design. There's also the low wall that now creates a barrier between the stage area and the audience. I expect that we will come up with something yet this year.Have a great rest of the summer!Doug MarquisAsst. Mgr. CHQ Activities-------------- Original message --------------

GreetingsSince you asked:I thought both campfire programs were excellent. I haven't been to the ranch in several years and the change was refreshing - although I kind of missed the Conquistador ??? and his "Spanish Blade". The propane "campfires" will be/were much nicer than kerosene lanterns or floodlights during those times of "Extreme Fire Danger EVERYWHERE"; ceramic logs might add to the realism. I don't know how many caught it, but I liked the tie-in between the historic Scout and the film in the Opening Campfire and the letter home to the boy's Grandpa.I also missed the photo backdrops "WAMI" and arrowhead for crews to take pictures in front of at the closing fire, but the facility was great and the program well done.Keep up the excellent work.Happy Trails,Roy FisherWe've put a lot of work into the new facilities and programs, and we would be interested in feedback from anyone who's returned from the trail this year.------------------------------------------------------- Scouting E-mail Discussion Lists @ usscouts.org Listserv Commands at http://usscouts.org/lists/lc.asp ------------------------------------------------------- Send listserv commands to: listserv@troop47.com Send postings to: philmont@troop47.com List FAQ found at: http://usscouts.org/lists/faq.asp List Administrator: philmont_owner@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe send text email to: To: listserv@troop47.com Subject: unsubscribe Body: unsubscribe philmont@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow Scouts and Scouters, do your best to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scouting E-mail Discussion Lists @ usscouts.org Listserv Commands at http://usscouts.org/lists/lc.asp ------------------------------------------------------- Send listserv commands to: listserv@troop47.com Send postings to: philmont@troop47.com List FAQ found at: http://usscouts.org/lists/faq.asp List Administrator: philmont_owner@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe send text email to: To: listserv@troop47.com Subject: unsubscribe Body: unsubscribe philmont@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow Scouts and Scouters, do your best to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. -------------------------------------------------------
