In 2005 we were very late in the season (809) and there were only 2
other crews on the train. They put us all over the place.
Gear was in the baggage car both ways. One of the other crews
was from San Diego. They apparently weren't to cautious about
their train tickets. They took the web page default of train to
LA then from LA to Raton. They could have taken a later train to
Fullerton and taken the train from Fullerton to Raton, since the
LA train goes back through Fullerton where it heads in a different
direction.
Comment: If you pick up the train in LA then since it is the originating station they can easily put all of the scouts into one car. Amtrak generally has no assigned seating and after all the scouts are thrown into the back cars everyone else takes seats anywhere they want. So if you were to pick up the train in Fullerton, Amtrak would not have an empty section to give to your troop. It may be possible to request when booking for your group a reserved area together and Amtrak would probably accommodate that request and reserve a group of seats. On the way back Amtrak usually does keep a section reserved for the Scouts because they know that people are always getting on in Raton.
I'm not sure what there reason is but both times I went to Philmont on the way there our luggage was stored on the lower level of the car we were in. One time on the way back it was placed in the luggage car and the other on the lower level.
