I think that blisters are a sign of a foot/sock/boot mismatch. I run
a lot. I have run for 8 hours in wet shoes and socks on more than one
occasion without getting a blister. I have also gotten a blister in
under 30 minutes of hiking. On the 8 hour runs I was wearing the
thick Thorlo running socks and running shoes. The trails were
moderate (lots of roots no rocks) to very rocky and underwater. In
the later case I had a wrinkle in my coolmax liner that I didn't deal
with right away and I ended up with a blister.
Just got back from Trek 6 (65 miles with only one tiny blister on the
last 12 mile day coming down tooth ridge. Used thick Thorlo Scout
socks with Coolmax liners in Bates 924 Jungle boots. The boots were
well broken in. Now they are broken down. :) When I got them years
ago I put them on, soaked them and wore them until they dried out.
Every foot/sock/boot combination is different. Find something that
works and "try" to stick with it. We had one kid who wore cotton
socks that didn't even come up to the top of his boots. He had no
problems. Another kid ended up with blisters on both heels until we
got him some thicker outer socks. He had no problems on any of the
shakedown hikes or on our trip last summer where he used the same
boots. He never complained one bit either.
