Bob, I had a less serious, but similar reaction to my Vasque Sundowners.
My father and older brother swear by those boots, so of course I had to have
them too. I had blisters for my whole trek (my preferred treatment method
is a band-aid, moleskin, and duct tape). 2 years later I decided that the
pain I felt on the back of my foot was just not good, so I switched to a
pair of Salomons, and haven't had a problem since. For the record, my foot
is shaped like a lightbulb or a pear--narrow heel, very wide toe area. So,
some boots may be amazing, and your feet probably do need to get used to
different footwear (try getting used to heels someday!) but if the boot
shape doesn't fit your foot shape, you're in for a rough time.

p.s. the best fitting and explanation of my foot shape I've ever recieved
was at a Surefoot ski shop at Park City Mountain Resort. Granted this was
to find my best ski boot, but I can translate the information to hiking
boots easily.
