While I consult the insignia guide and own a copy, I'm not a slavish adherent. In my copy, the permissible patches for the red wool jac-shirt are discussed on page 5, as is their placement. Placement of the Loon or Philmont Bull is discussed on page 35 (The 6" Sea Base Conch is worn centered on the back of the jac-shirt. I also have in my collection a Sea Base Conch which is not a 6" circular patch, but a rendition of the conch alone. Perhaps this is worn above the left pocket. My guide is silent on this point).
Only certain patches are authorized for the back of the jac shirt. The 50 Miler is not one of them. My guide is silent as to other 6" patches offered for sale by Philmont and also by Northern Tier. If I didn't already have a 6" patch on the back, I might consider one of these if I had participated in the program depicted.
I wear two bulls for the two expeditions of my youth (both with the tail over the seam). I have not added bulls for my adult expeditions, as this would begin to look ridiculous, in my opinion. Although the current insignia guide prescribes only one of the designated back patches centered on the back of the jacket, I wear two, the 1969 Jamboree 6" patch, and the old OA 6" patch (with the multicolored Indian portrait). The reason is that when I earned those two patches in the 1960's, the insignia guide allowed two (but no more than two) such patches on the jac shirt.
I try to counsel youth who are fortunate enough to possess a jac shirt to follow the insignia guide, and not turn a handsome piece of uniform into a gaudy "patch blanket".
Just my two cents.
