My daughter and two of her female friends used the following technique to come back from trek 30
blister free. I read about it on a backpacker.com reader forum. Tracked down the materials. They
worked great. She had been on previous week to 10 day treks (including a previous trek at Philmont)
and had lots of problems with blisters despite trying all sorts and combinations of socks with and
without liners together with "professionally fit" boots. She has narrow, low to medium volume feet and
its very difficult to find boots that fit her well, even with inserts.
Here's the products and technique they used: Tuf-Skin colorless formula, 4 oz aerosol; Omniflex non-
woven retention tape (comes in different size rolls, my daughter used the 4 inch wide variety and cut
them to size), Body Glide anti-friction skin formula. The aerosol adhesive and retention tape were
purchased on-line from Medo Sports Mediciane website (http://www.medco-athletics.com). The Tuf
Skin comes in 4, 6 & 10 oz aerosol and 8 oz pump. The retention tape comes in rolls 2, 4 and 6 inches
wide by 10 yards. We found the Body Glide at a bicycle shop, but also available at some sporting good
stores and at stores catering to the horse riding crowd. It comes in a dispenser identical to an
underarm deodorant applicator.
Spray the Tuf-Skin on clean dry feet in area where blisters are normally a problem. Apply retention
tape to feet. Pinch and cut off extra material where it bunches together after going around wider portion
of area covered. Cut rounded edges on square corners of tape to prevent rolling of tape corners.
Apply Body Glide to other areas of feet not covered by retention tape. Put on dry socks and boots and
enjoy. This technique also worked with moist socks when dry ones were not available due to hiking 7
out of 10 days through rain, sleet, hail and snow during our late June through early July trek.
I am not trying to market any particular product here. This is a procedure and a group of products that
were recommended by others that also worked with our group of blister-prone trekers.
