Take note of what your Ranger wears -
Didn't see any in the Venturing Shorts
Did see a few in BSA Green Cotton/Poly Shorts
Saw a bunch in the Columbia Shorts or Zips that TOTT sells ... which are ... 100% cotton.
While not a fan of cotton in general for hiking wear, I must admit that I own a pair of these shorts (and also the cargo Zips) and have used the shorts on two treks ... one very wet trek in '04 and one wery dry in '06 along with a bunch of shakedowns in between, these have performed very well and dried quickly when washed and hung out to dry on the trail. They are my favorite trail wear for several reasons including those above as well as the pocket design.
Our Ranger told us he coveted a pair of the Columbia Shorts but they were a little rich for his blood ... our four advisors pitched in on a pair for him ... it didn't hurt that he was one of our troop's alumni ...
