[Philmont] Trail peak with full packs?

Look at the map for this stage of your trek (Trek 14) on the Philsearch project.
See http://www.troop6bsa.org/?cmd=philsearch - click on treks - click
on 14 - click on (Beaubien) "via Trail Peak 8.29 miles"

Click on the map to enlarge it. It looks like you start to cross
quite a few contour lines from Fowler Pass to get to Trail Peak.

Count these to get an estimate of the altitude change which you can
confirm with an altimeter during your hike, if you choose this route.

Note that the Fowler Pass route is shorter and has fewer contour lines crossed.

I'd say it all depends on what kind of trek you want for this leg of
your trip. Getting to the top of Trail Peak will be tougher but you
will have a terrific view from there.

The fact that the Trail Peak route is an option implies you should be
able to do it with full packs.

Just leave enough time to take the altitude climb at a pace that
everyone can stay with.
