[Philmont] Trail peak with full packs?

Our crew did Trek 4 in 2005. Nothing has changed on the trek even though it is now Trek 14.

Your question about going from Fowler's Pass up to Trail Peak is one we discussed as a crew, too. We decided that we would take that route with full pack on the way to Beaubien for a number of reasons. It was a good decision, although a tough hike nearly straight up.

At Beaubien, you may end up doing your conservation project, so if you have any thoughts of wanting to hike up to Trail Peak, the conservation project will limit your time somewhat.

It would be my suggestion to go that route. The pride in completing that climb with your crew will be something you all will be proud of after your trip is complete.

One more thing related to Beaubien - don't make a special run to Phillips Junction for your food replenishment. You hike right past there in the morning on the way to Crooked Creek. It makes no sense to do a "down and back" trip to PJ since you'll be there the next morning. You can either pick up an additional breakfast at base camp or eat breakfast at PJ once you get your food. It's only a 45 minute hike to get there.

Good luck. It's a very good trek.
