Joe Johnstone asks...

Bear Caves to Beaubien, how is the hike up and over Trail Peak?? Can we make
it with full packs?

Comments...

My 2003 Scoutreach crew chose to do that.? Our sister crew chose going to Fish Camp, and skipped Trail Peak altogether.? (One of the Advisors on that crew and I have been to Philmont six times together - I have climbed Trail Peak three times, but he never has unless he did Trail Peak the summer of 2004 when he worked on staff.? Hmmm.)

I have done the old straight up the mountain route from Beaubien, the new switchback trail, and the Fowler Pass approach you are asking about.? The last is the original trail and?basically takes the contours straight on, though nothing like the abandoned trail on the other side - that was insane.? My crew left from Crater Lake early and stopped for breakfast at Fowler Pass.? Then a constant caterpillar to the top.

Whether you choose to do that is one piece of the puzzle of how you will do all the things you will be doing at Beaubien - Trail Peak, what time your horse ride is, presumably your Conservation project, and a possilbe food pickup at Phillips Junction (unless you can arrange your meals so that you can avoid carrying four days of food from PJ to Beaubien, and then back - in 1999 on what is now Trek 14 that could be done by showing up at PJ at 8:00 on Day 7, getting the food pickup, and then eating a breakfast you just picked up.)

Trek 14 is a?nice combination of hikes and programs - your crew will have a great time!
