In 1996, we side hiked Trail Peak from Beaubien on a layover day and
went up the "steep side". I was glad we did because we saw parts of the
aircraft wreckage that are not visible if you come up and go back down
from the Fowler Pass side (which has been the path chosen by every
subsequent crew I've had the privilege of accompanying to Trail Peak).
When we show people pictures of our crew members standing by the prop or
engine cowling that can be seen along that trail, even some people who
have been to Trail Peak multiple times have not seen these things.
To the question, as we were going up, we did meet a crew coming down
with full packs, so I know it's possible, but I would only recommend it
for older crews that are very fit (both youth and adults) to avoid
injury. It's very steep. I've never been on the old Stockade trail from
Tooth Ridge, but I'd estimate the steep side of Trail Peak is just as
steep.
Enjoy your trek, and be sure to post a report upon your return for us
old scouters who lurk here wanting to re-live our Philmont experiences
vicariously through you!
