Hopefully, the crew filled out and turned in the evaluations (by youth and
adult crew members) at the end of the trek.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to an early season trek. One
advantage is the back country latrines are fresh and don't smell too bad.
One disadvantage is that your Ranger is probably a rookie at his/her job.
Typically, a first year Philmont Ranger is age 19-20, probably a veteran
of a prior trek when he/she was a Scout or Venturer. If you're fortunate,
your Ranger has taken part in a Rayado trek. Remember that Rangers are
there because they love Philmont, not because they are going to make a lot
of money during the summer.
Your Ranger has received a few days of "Ranger Training" but the very
first crew is usually a challenge. Philmont protocols change each year
and the Ranger does his/her best to communicate the current protocols to
your crew. If your Ranger told you not to take cups on the trail, that's
probably what he/she was told during training.
Fortunately, as the camping season progresses and Rangers become more
confident and knowledgeable, their advice gets better.
BTW, if you ever get a chance to spend a little time with a former
Philmont Ranger, ask to hear a few "stupid advisor" stories. :-)
