On my last trip to Philmont and all of my other bping trips I use expdition weight Merino wool socks and no liners. They are the ones with the "loopy" and soft insides. I bought them at Sierra Trading Post or Hot Deals from Campmor I think. Several of the kids in our crew wore the same kind and had no problems. I use the same kind of sock to hike in year around and it does get warm here in Missouri during the summer. Have boxes of ragg wools and liners, used them for 30+ years but I use the expedition weights for hiking. I wear all kinds and weights of wools everyday. Smart wool aren't the only guys using Merino wool for socks. I also never wear "boots", the heavy trail shoes are great today. I read in a post last year or so that some docs think boots can lead some folks to get sprained ankles - true for me.
