We returned for Trek #8 on 6/30. Some additional comments on the Trek:
Great experience for my first time to Philmont.
Philstaff was excellent and very responsive. (I left some required
medications in base camp the first day with all the repacking for the
Trek. Staff had them out to us in 1.5 hours at our first stop on Day #2
after a radio call to Medical. They were able to go into the lockers
and retrieve them and deliver to Zastrow).
Views from Black Mountain were awesome on Day #11. I thought they were
even better than Phillips and we were the only crew at the summit. This
was a long day due to the elevation changes of Bear Mountain and Black
Mountain.
Take the sunset hike at Comanche Camp. Best sunset view we had on the
Trek.
On Day #12 we left Clark's Fork at sunrise so we could get back into
base camp by noon. Spent some time on Tooth and made our way into base
camp by 11:30, did all our check in stuff, cleaned up and went into town
for Pizza. Great way to complete the Trek.
We had rain/hail almost every day except for the last 2 days, but they
were usually short in duration. Some days we were just lucky that we
did not get the brunt of the storms that rolled through. Typically they
occurred from 1 to 4 pm and the skies would clear again by nightfall.
We were fortunate in that we were usually at our camps each day before
the rain occurred.

We leave July 7 for Philmont and will be on Trek 8. Do you have any
other info you can share with us about that trek?
Thanks,
John

We just returned from a great 2 weeks at Philmont. I'll add more
in the
next day or two, but here are a few items...
We did trek #8 in the South country. Lots of camps are reporting
bear
sightings, but we did not see one ourselves (except from the
train window),
and did not hear of any problems from said sightings.
Fire danger was low when we started, and was at medium when we
returned to
base, but all camps are encouraging making small fires in the
fire rings.
All ashes must be packed out at least a 1/2 mile from camp to be
dispursed
in the woods. We made a fire almost every night.
The weather was beautiful with afternoon storms just now
starting to show
up. We were rain free for the first 8 days.
Mosquitos were only a minor problem at the higher elevations.
Put on your
bug spray before hiking Mt. Phillips, because they would attack
every time
you stopped to rest (which was a lot in our case, lol).
Trails were in great shape, except those around Mt. Phillips
(which were
horribly rocky).
Philstaff was energetic and fun.
We did our cons project at Apache Creek. They are clearing
campsites of
dead wood and trees to lower the fire risk.
That's it for now.
Thanks,
Jim

OK, I'm dying here . Some crews have already come off the
trail, any news about conditions? Location of Cons Projects?
Etc.? My
Philstaff-provided info is pretty scarce.....
