As for GPS, my brother in law was tossing out his really old one so I thought I'd bring it along just for kicks as I've never played with one before.

I've been a GPS user since they first turned the system on after Desert Storm.
My advise is to either get really good with it or leave it at home least you spend all your waking moments engrossed in "how does this damned thing work".
If you get really good with it, then leave it in your pack pocket adn let it track your path. Don't be the geek advisor who walks around with his GPS in his hand. Talk about ruil some kids trek!
I'm a big fan of GPS use, but left mine at home when I went to Philmont in 2002 and I'm glad I did.
. After going in 1959 and showing my map to literally thousands of students before they went adn then them showing me their trek the next school year, I've just about got Philmont memorized though. It's the Scouts trip adn THEY need to do the map and compass work and trail selection EVEN if they pick the wrong one.
Picking the wrong trail at Philmont seems like a big deal from here at home, but on the trail it's not, it's just part of their learning curve.
