[Philmont] Stoves, adding a gas story

We have just returned from Philmont (623-M1) and have a stove story. We
carried 2 MSR Dragonfly stoves with us. We had a crew f 12 (9 Scouts and 3
adults); the Scouts and the adults cooked separately (the crew leader ate
with the adults).

We were on itinerary 9 and had our first food pickup at Rich Cabins. On the
morning we were departing from Rich Cabins we sent a couple of Scouts to the
cabin to have our fuel bottles refilled with white gas as the staff had
asked us to do so in the AM.

Our next stop was a trail camp in Greenwood Canyon. When the Scouts lit
their stove there were huge flames and first we thought they had just
over-primed the stove, but that was not the case.

Upon further investigation we discovered the staff had refilled our fuel
bottles with kerosene and not white gas.

We had to nurse the stoves along for four days until we reached Baldy Town,
where the kerosene was dumped and the bottles refilled with white gas.

My word of caution. Don't assume the staff is doing the right thing. Give
your fuel bottle the sniff test before departing the cabin!

By the way, white gas is 10 cents per ounce. We carried two 12 oz bottles
and one 22 ox bottle, but didn't really need the second 12 oz bottle.

Hello everyone.

I am going on a trek later this month, and I don't want to bring my stove,
because it requires fuel cannisters that cannot be refilled.
Does Philmont have stoves that they rent out to crews?

Thanks

Pete J
