[Philmont] What I'd do, if anything, different!

I believe the case of the ranger telling the crew that using sanitizer before handling food was good enough should have offered the "advisors" a chance to step in and "advise".

Best case scenario would have been an advisor asking the Ranger for a minute of his time, stepping away from the group and offering some words of wisdom about the benefits of soap in that situation. After the short discussion, let him make the change with the crew vs. simply stepping in and perhaps making the ranger look bad or coming off as the "know all".

Believe me... I'm not anal about dirt and food preparation when camping. However, dirty hands require soap, not sanitizer.

Sanitizer only disinfects the outer layer of dirt. Hands get wet during food prep and you have germs in the food. Leave the sanitizer at home, take soap.

Just got out of the Grand Canyon and that was the experience down there. Too much sanitizer and not enough soap.

Handwashing Before Cooking - Our ranger taught our Scouts that they didn't need to wash their filthy dirt crusted hands before handling food. They just used some hand sanitizer. My opinion, this was stupid and disgusting, but our Scouts followed their ranger training.

I agree, this is one of my few hot buttons. Many of our scouts have substituted hand "sanitizing" for regular washing, taught by well-meaning moms who are anxious about all the nasty germs on everything. Why anyone would want to smear more smelly goop on top of days worth of dirt and scuzz is beyond me. I don't ban the sanitizer (though I'd like to) but insist that crew cooks do a normal handwashing before dinner prep.
