Steve writes that while stuck in base camp, he headed for the Villa only to be told that tours require a reservation. If you're passing through CHQ and want a tour, head for the Seton Museum, where they're likely to tell you one is kicking off in 10 minutes, if you hustle. The Museum is where the reservations are made, for casual visitors. You may be teamed up with a smelly crew straight off the trail, but that's part of the charm.

For those who may be interested, I just got home tonight from leading a crew of 7 youth and 4 adults on a canoe trek in the Adirondacks from Lower Forge to Follensby Clear Pond (which is off of Upper Saranac Lake). I still have to measure how far past 70 miles it was in 5 days (the 6th day was minimal, and included a tour of the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake-highly recommended). Very challenging, Real growth experience for the crew. Six portages, of a mile to a mile and a half (thank God for Kevlar canoes). Made all of the arrangements myself, canoe rental, food, permits.Acted as my own guide, as I had done most of this route several times before (as had the other adults, on one previous occasion). Several councils operate camps which provide such treks without the do-it-yourself part. Bear precautions. Loons. Bald Eagles. Neat. You may have read about the recent mapping of the Northern Forest Canoe trail, 740 miles beginning in Lower Forge, NY and continuing through Verm
ont, Quebec, New Hampshire and Maine. (6-8 weeks-not for the faint-hearted).

Write me off list if you want tips about bringing the Adirondack experience to your boys.

Could write paragraphs or pages, but this is a Philmont list.

All for now.
