I do not have a pair of the Keen sandles that you guys are discussing, but I just got back from Philmont (Trek 27--80 miles, 12,000 feet total ascent, climbed Baldy and the Tooth), and wore a pair of Keen low-cut Targhee II hiking shoes the whole time. ( http://www.rei.com/product/741491 ) In preparation for the trip I had worried about footwear more than any other piece of equipment and must say that the Keen's were awesome. No blisters the whole trip except for one day when I tried to wear ordinary hiking socks (the remainder of the time I wore SmartWool Adrenaline micro trail running socks, which were equally awesome). Only one time (the ankle-breaker part of Tooth Ridge Trail) did I think I might have benefited from mid-cut boots. The rest of the time the Keens were great and I especially appreciated the lighter weight resulting from the low-cut design. I am not sure about the water shoes made by Keen, but the Targhee is one awesome shoe.

1. Slippery as crap. Every person on the trip who took keens swears they will never take them again on a river trip. (Philmont is different) They slid on anything wet. I had just got down moving a rattlesnake out of camp one morning and was wearing the keens. Slipped on wet grass and slid into him down the slope. That was an exciting 5 milliseconds of my life. (Snake and I are both OK.)
2. Gravel sorter. They also did a great job of sorting gravel. I had about one of every type of rock in them at the end of any hike. One 4 mile hike I took them off 20 times to get gravel out of them.
Nice around town, but they’ll never leave the city limits again.

Subject: [Philmont] Footwear question
Keens are actually patented as a "closed toe shoes" and as such the health department cannot stop you from wearing them if you worked in a restaurant kitchen. (OSHA has a requirement that you must wear "closed toe shoe" at work in a kitchen, amongst other places.) Philmont can ( and of course does) make what ever rules they want, but the only way to promote change is to start the first step by asking for their opinion about your foot ware. If (when) they say NO, ask for a waiver due to your specific situation. The proof is in the pudding, 150 miles of backpacking with 30+ pounds on your back and Keens on your feet may be the right mix of data to allow an exception. Plenty of experienced backpackers have changed from traditional boots to shoes and even to Keens and such. Philmont will eventually grow with the times, but it will be a slow growth and will occur only if and when their guests apply more frequent pressure to allow easier access to foot ware exceptions,
which in time will allow for a relaxation of the current rules (which in reality are not unreasonable as they stand today).

I wore these as camp shoes in 2005 http://www.rei.com/product/720183 The heal is closed off more than the other pair. I also wore my sock liners after I rubbed a blister on my heal retreving the bear bags one morning (only one I got on the trek). Like them because I can put them toe in heal and strap on my backpack, and they allow my feet to air. The are also perfect for kayaking (first place I used them). On second pair.

I used these for my "CAMP" shoes in 2003 and plan to use them this summer too. No one said anything in 2003.
I wanted these in 2003 after having to "wet foot" cross a lot of streams in 1999. Happy there are LOTS of bridges to use now.
Wouldn't want to hike full time in them, taking lots of duct tape in case I blow out a boot.
