To re-open the discussion on chairs, a group that matched our itinerary for
a few days brought several different types of camp chairs on the trail.
The one they preferred was a 3-legged stool with two arms that held a lower
back crosspiece. Not sure of the brand, but it didn't look like it weighed
much and collapsed into a tubular shape that slipped into the backpack (or
strapped on the back) quite easily.
What my fellow advisor and I did was to take a piece of closed cell foam
(actually, an old army sleeping pad cut up). The former Girl Scouts in our
trek called them our "sit upons". We could fold it in half for more
thickness, or open it up to provide some back padding when leaning against
a log or tree. It worked great for us and only weighed a few ounces. In
areas where the ground was damp or pokey, it kept us up off the dampness
and pointy things. We even brought them to advisor's coffee to pad the
bench or porch swing. Plus, it made a nice spot to put your knee when you
were packing your pack, or a place to sit anything you wanted up out of the
dirt.
I still remember a guy hiking by us on our 2002 trek with quite the
contraption on his backpack. As he got closer, we saw that it was a full
size, old-style, aluminum lawn chair with webbing. He said it didn't
really weigh much, but was the first thing he put in when he packs for any
backpack.
To each his own, I guess. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04, and '07).
