get to be 21????

OK Pholks on the PhiList. Sending cards is nice, but what Cade adn his friends need is COOKIES, lots of COOKIES. The PhilMenu has lots of things, but no homemade cookies, so let's rally and send them some cookies. Just do it.

Well, Cathy with a C, if you have to be told, then you have to be told.
When the cold winds of October 1985 were blowing, YOU and someone that you dearly loved ingaged in some sort of activity that resulted in his conception. That's how he got to be 21! The rest is, as they say, history.
That history has been filled with some moments of great pride and some moments of sheer terror shich all parents understand.
Now the card idea is supurb. Not unlike what I pulled on my oldest daughters 21st birthday.
She was born on Labor day 1979. When she was 20 we were into canoeing heavy duty. We packed up and took off on a Labor Day canoe trip for three days down the Sabine river along with about 500 other hearty souls from both Texas and Louisiana.
Af first she told me that was not her idea of the ideal activity to celebrate her 21st birthday on.
On the first night on the river, the night of her birthday we camped on a huge sandbar with all of the people on the canoe trip. The entire Houston Canoe Club was there. After supper I made camp stove peach cobbler for the entire bunch and served it by lantern light. I made enough for everyone. That was about 6 or 7 GALONS and I made it on a Coleman stove. At times the line was over 100 people long but we had enough.
It was the camp stove version of Philmont Ranger cobbler. You take canned, sliced peaches and put them in a pot, add some sugar and red hots and bring to a boil. Mix biscuit dough and spoon it into the boiling mass until you can't get any more in, cover and let stand staming off fire for a while. Repeat with the next pot until you have the right amount for the crowd.
While I was doing this, her little sister Allison, then 13, who is now 20 was occupying Kathleens time down at the river swimming. Allisons instructions were to OCCUPY her sister at the river for at least an hour. Allison did a great job of diversion while I cooked and Susan my wife took a birthday card around and got over 300 signatures on it.
Afterward Kathleen was hosted with the singing of Happy Birthday by one happy crowd. She received all sorts of impromptu presents from paddles to life jackets to caaps. You name it whatever people could conjure up from their kit bag they did.
To this day she will tell you it ws the best birthday party she has ever had.
Allison will turn 21 this October and I'm really tryint to figure out a similar ploy, however her college days are the crux of the matter. Six days later Susan and I leave for our first ever together trip to Philmont for Autumn Adventure.
So, the reason I know "how he got to be 21" was that durnjign the exact frame of time we also enjoyed and suffered through their upbringing. I'm sure you Pholks get the same feeling when you see a young couple with a new child in tow. Our combined thought is "I'm glad that's their baby because I don't think I could go through all that again. It was a wonderful experience, but we are glad its' someone elses turn now".
So, to an enlightneed mom, Happy birthday to your son and just wait, it won't be lopng until he dumps off some grandkids for you to look after while HE and his are off tromping around in the monutains on a little "vacation" while you change adn wash more diapers.
Not to spoil your thoughts of freedom right around the corner, but the realities of life and the pride of your childrens success.
Gimme his address at Philmont and I'll sned a card alopng with some cookies, the one thing in high demand on the trail.
